Dúisigh is built to collect as little as possible. There are no ads, no analytics or tracking tools, and you don't need an account to use it. This page explains what does leave your phone, where it goes and why. It covers the iPhone app and the Android app.

On your phone

Your progress, XP, streaks, review cards, saved conversations and settings are stored on your phone. The home screen widget reads a summary of them from the app on the same device. Reminders are scheduled on your phone; nothing is sent to a server to deliver them. On Android, your phone's own Google backup may include this data, under your Google account's backup settings.

Signing in (optional)

iPhone: if you sign in with Apple, the app keeps Apple's identifier for you in your iPhone's Keychain, and the name and email Apple shares (which can be a private relay address) on your device. Signing in turns on saving your progress to your own iCloud account, using Apple's iCloud storage. We can't see that data.

Android: if you sign in with Google, our server receives your Google account ID, name and email address from Google, and stores them with a copy of your learning progress (lessons done, activity days, XP, badges, review and flashcard schedules and your daily goal) so it stays in step across your devices. Saved conversations stay on your phone. You can delete your account and everything stored with it at any time; see Delete your account.

Subscriptions

Apple (on iPhone) or Google Play (on Android) handles all payments; we never see your card details. When you use a Pro feature, our server asks Apple's App Store Server API or the Google Play Developer API whether your subscription is active, using the transaction ID or purchase token of your purchase, and remembers the answer for 15 minutes.

Conversations with the AI tutor (Pro)

When you have a conversation, what you say (as text) and the conversation so far are sent through our server to Anthropic, whose Claude model writes the tutor's reply. Our server does not store the text of your conversations. Anthropic processes it under its commercial terms and does not use it to train its models.

Speech

When you speak in the placement check, speak along or a conversation, your voice goes straight from your phone to Microsoft Azure AI Speech, which turns it into text. Azure also voices the tutor's replies. Our server only hands your phone a short-lived access token for this; your audio never passes through it. Lesson audio is built into the app.

What our server keeps

Our server runs on Cloudflare Workers and stores only:

  • if you sign in with Google on Android: your account (Google ID, name, email) and your synced progress, until you delete your account;
  • how many conversations and turns you've used, and their approximate cost, keyed to your subscription's transaction ID or a one-way hash of your purchase token. These are deleted automatically after 2 to 40 days;
  • for the free spoken placement check, a random identifier for your device, so each device gets one free check.

Data travels between the app and our server encrypted (HTTPS). Like any web service, Cloudflare may briefly process technical data such as IP addresses to deliver and protect it.

Your choices

  • Deleting the app removes everything stored on your phone.
  • Android: in the app, Me › Your data › Delete account removes your account and synced progress from our server straight away. You can also email us; see Delete your account.
  • iPhone: sign out in the app, or stop using Apple ID with Dúisigh in Settings, to stop iCloud saving.
  • You can turn off reminders in the app or in your phone's settings at any time.
  • Microphone access is only asked for when you first speak, and can be turned off in your phone's settings.

Children

Dúisigh isn't directed at children under 16.
